The steel beam connects to the column strong axis using a bolted shear plate combined with top and bottom flange moment connections. Complete joint penetration welds are specified typically at the top and bottom beam flanges to the column. Stiffener plates are included on each side with a thickness matching the larger beam flange. Additional stiffener plates are required on each side if dimension X exceeds three inches. Shear plate, bolts, and welds are sized per schedule with AISC minimum fillet welds at the shear tab.
