This structural steel detail shows a wide flange column connected to a wide flange frame beam utilizing a one-inch cap plate joined with a complete joint penetration weld to the column below. Grade 65 knife plates measuring 1 1/2 inches by 4 inches by the column depth minus one inch are welded to the cap plate and lateral tie plates using half-inch fillet welds. Additional grade 50 plates measuring 1/2 inch by 2 inches by 1 foot zero inches are welded typically in pairs. Lateral tie plates are sized per plan and centered on the column, with clearance and weld sizes specified throughout the assembly.
