A wide flange beam connects to a wide flange column in a moment frame using a welded shear connection plate. The shear connection plate thickness is specified as the larger of the beam web thickness and three-eighths of an inch minimum, welded to the column with a partial-joint-penetration weld sized at seventy-five percent of the plate thickness. A weld access hole is detailed at the beam flange junction, requiring complete-joint-penetration welds designated as demand critical. Geometric limitations require a one-quarter to one-half inch minimum clearance for the weld access hole, with a one-half to one-inch weld clearance zone and a slope angle ranging between twenty and forty degrees typical. Additional dimensions include a one-inch minimum offset from the column face and a two-inch minimum dimension to the access hole radius.
