Concrete slab-on-grade construction joints and sawn control joints bear directly on compacted subgrade. The construction joint features a thickened slab edge with a continuous key, steel reinforcing spliced at the joint, and an alternative option for smooth unbonded dowels measuring one-half inch in diameter by eighteen inches long spaced at sixteen inches on center. The control joint incorporates a sawn or formed joint cut to a depth equal to one-quarter of the slab thickness within twelve hours following the pour, with continuous steel reinforcing running through the slab.
