Two reinforcing bars of diameter d sub b are joined in a parallel configuration with weld filler metal deposited in the interstitial spaces. A minimum root opening of one-sixteenth inch is maintained between the bars. The weld fill extends to a depth of one-third of the bar diameter on opposing sides.
