An open web steel joist bears on a wide flange girder, with wide flange blocking installed on each side of the joist. A 1/2" x 3 1/2" Grade 50 steel tie plate is centered on the blocking at both the top and bottom flanges. Tie plates are secured with 1/4" fillet welds to the open web joist and the wide flange girder, with the girder connection specified as a three-sided weld. The joist manufacturer must keep joist webs clear of the connecting plates to accommodate the assembly. Metal decking is installed over the top of the connection, with a 4" typical length specified at each end of the blocking.
