This moment connection joins a wide flange beam to a hollow structural section column using complete joint penetration welds at the top and bottom flanges. The flange welds are specified as complete joint penetration or an alternative, with five-eighths inch thick plates. The beam web is connected to the column via a shear tab using a standard bolted beam connection schedule. A note indicates that a beam may occur on the opposite side of the column. All welds must conform to American Welding Society D1.8 standards where members are designated as part of the seismic force-resisting system, and backing bars at the bottom flange must be removed, back-gouged, and reinforced per American Institute of Steel Construction 358, Chapter 3.
