This moment connection joins a wide flange beam to a column using full-depth flange plates. The flange plates are sized at 1.4 times the beam flange thickness, while the web plates are sized at 1.4 times the beam web thickness. The flange plates are connected to the column web and flanges using complete joint penetration welds with backgouging, applied to all sides. The web plates are connected to the column with five-eighths inch fillet welds on both sides, typical for all sides. Field welding for the complete joint penetration connections is performed only when indicated on the drawings. The beam-to-column angle may vary, though the assembly is shown at a ninety-degree orientation.
