A heavy structural steel column base connection uses a 1 1/2-inch thick Grade 50 base plate anchored by eight 1-inch diameter high-strength anchor rods arranged around the column profile. Three-quarter by six-inch Grade 50 stiffener plates are welded to the base plate and column flanges and web using three-eighths-inch fillet welds. Three-by-three-by-one-half-inch washer plates with standard-size holes are positioned at each anchor rod and secured with one-quarter-inch fillet welds to the base plate.
