A structural steel wide-flange column features a welded cap plate with a thickness of one-half inch at W10 or W8 shapes, and seven-eighths inch at W14 or W12 shapes. A vertical stiffener plate is centered beneath the cap plate inside the column web, welded with a fillet weld sized to half the web thickness. The column flange is welded to the cap plate with a three-eighths inch fillet weld. A shear tab is provided at the column face where required for framing members.
