An optional construction joint features a roughened surface to one-quarter-inch amplitude between the concrete footing and the two-foot-wide by two-foot-deep concrete shear key. The shear key is reinforced with number five continuous horizontal bars spaced at a maximum of twelve inches on center vertically and number six vertical bars spaced at eight inches on center. The vertical bars feature a standard one-hundred-eighty-degree hook at the bottom and a standard ninety-degree hook at the top, centered within the key. Three inches of concrete clear cover is provided to the reinforcement.
