A step in a concrete slab-on-grade incorporates a thickened edge and subgrade preparation per plan. Continuous number four reinforcing bars and additional number four bars placed where the step exceeds twelve inches in height reinforce the assembly. An optional construction joint features a roughened surface with a one-quarter inch amplitude. Two-inch concrete clearance is maintained at the vertical step transition, and the thickened edge incorporates an eight-inch base width with a four-inch minimum thickness.
