Continuity plates are placed on both sides of the column web with a thickness based on the connecting beam flanges. A cope in the continuity plate is left unwelded at a distance of one half-inch per AISC dimension k1 from the web-to-flange junction. Optional complete-joint-penetration or fillet welds are specified at the column flanges and web. Dimensions for the plate cutouts reference standard AISC k and k1 values.
