Splice connection between an upper and lower structural steel column. The column flanges are chamfered before welding and joined using a complete joint penetration weld with a backing bar. A weld access hole is provided per AISC 360 at the web and flange intersection. The transition profile features a two-and-a-half to one taper on the flange width when transitioning between columns of differing sizes.
