Supplemental steel angles are added to the top and bottom chords of open-web steel joists or girders when point loads exceed specific thresholds at a distance from panel points. An L2x2x1/4 angle is field welded with a three-sixteenths inch fillet weld applied one and one-half inches each end typically when the top chord point load exceeds two hundred fifty pounds at a distance greater than six inches from a panel point. A similar L2x2x1/4 angle is added when the bottom chord point load exceeds two hundred pounds at a distance greater than six inches from a panel point. Extra angles are field welded from the point load to the nearest panel point on the opposite chord as required.
