Reinforcement requirements for a square opening within a reinforced concrete slab consist of one number five reinforcing bar framing each side of the opening, extending two feet beyond the opening dimension on each side. One number five diagonal reinforcing bar is placed at each corner of the opening, extending four feet in length. These bars are typical for all four corners and sides of the opening to ensure structural integrity around the void.
