Control joints in a concrete slab on grade are formed with a sawcut extending one-quarter of the slab depth. The doweled control joint variation incorporates one and one-quarter inch diameter by one-foot four-inch smooth dowels spaced at twelve inches on center across the joint. These smooth dowels are positioned at the mid-depth of the slab with two inches of clearance to the edges of the joint. Joint filler is applied within the sawcut for the doweled condition.
