A welded steel truss chord splice features a cover plate added to match the grade and width of the smaller flanged truss chord. Complete joint penetration groove welds are specified at the chord splice and cover plate connections. A two-foot length cover plate is positioned typically on each side of the splice centered on the alignment. Similar cover plate conditions apply at both top and bottom flanges when the centerline of the chord members align.
