Two vertical steel wall plates connect end-to-end with a complete-joint-penetration or partial-joint-penetration groove weld featuring a reinforcing fillet weld sized to develop the maximum yield strength of the wall plate. Additional backing plates are provided as necessary for erection alignment purposes by the contractor. Supplementary plates are positioned across the joint on both sides as required.
