This structural steel detail shows a wide-flange steel beam framing into a wide-flange steel column with top and bottom cover plates and a bolted shear tab connection. The connection utilizes A572 Grade 50 plates with a thickness equal to the beam flange thickness plus one-quarter inch, aligned flush with the top of the beam flange. A one-half inch plate is provided typically, along with one-inch plates on each side, joined with five-sixteenths inch fillet welds. Standard round holes are provided in the beam web and shear plate for the specified size and quantity of bolts. Weld access holes are detailed per AISC 360 standards, and corners are clipped as required.
