Steel beam web penetrations require reinforcement plates sized according to the penetration diameter relative to the total beam depth. When the penetration diameter is between one quarter and one half of the beam depth, web plates are placed above and below the opening with minimum clear distances of one quarter of the beam depth. When the penetration diameter is between one half and two thirds of the beam depth, web plates are placed with minimum clear distances of one sixth of the beam depth. Continuous web plates are used when two or more penetrations occur close together, utilizing the diameter of the largest penetration for spacing. No web plate is required when the penetration diameter is less than one quarter of the beam depth.
