Steel column base connections are supported by wide flange beams, featuring both wide flange column and hollow structural section or pipe column configurations. A three-quarter-inch thick base plate is secured with four three-quarter-inch diameter A325N bolts in a plan layout with one-and-a-half-inch minimum edge distances. One-half-inch thick stiffener plates are welded to both sides of the supporting beam web with three-sixteenth-inch fillet welds on three sides. The column connects to the base plate using minimum welds per AISC specifications along the web and flanges. A distance "k" per the AISC manual is maintained for the stiffener plate placement relative to the beam flange.
