Two structural steel columns are joined at a splice location per plan using paired channels placed against the column web on each side. The connection features eight seven-eighth-inch diameter A325-N bolts with two washers each, passing through standard holes in the column and oversized holes in the channel. For columns over thirty feet long or exceeding one hundred pounds per foot, two channels are required with one on each side of the web, and a second channel is provided on the backside where required. One-inch diameter A490 bolts are substituted for columns over one hundred sixty pounds per foot. Shims are provided as required, and an optional lifting hole up to two and a half inches in diameter is permitted in the channel per the contractor.
