Steel joist top and bottom chords require stiffening when subjected to concentrated loads. Two L2x2x3/16 inch angles are installed on each side of the joist web to reinforce the chord, secured with a 1/8 inch fillet weld, typical for both top and bottom chords. Stiffeners are required if the concentrated load is located greater than 3 inches from a panel point of the joist. If the concentrated load is less than 101 pounds, the stiffener is not required.
