A hollow structural section measuring eight by eight inches is spliced using a half-inch by six-inch plate on each side and a half-inch plate at the bottom, welded with quarter-inch fillet welds on three sides typical. The assembly sits below an existing roof ply, with a minimum splice length of eight feet required. In the adjacent detail, an identical hollow structural section rests on a two-and-a-quarter by twenty-one-inch plate, supported by a new double header with a U24 joist hanger where an existing framing member is cut. Below this, a three-eighths by eleven-inch plate connects to existing purlins using eight three-quarter-inch machine bolts at six inches on center typical at midspan.
