An isolation joint separates the concrete slab on grade from the structural steel column base plate and footing block-out. A one-half-inch-thick full slab depth isolation joint filler strip lines the temporary edge of the slab block-out, with a round configuration allowed at the contractor's option. The slab rests upon a vapor barrier, a leveling course of fine-grained aggregate, and a one-foot-thick base course of sandy gravel, crushed rock, or approved open-graded material compacted to ninety-five percent relative compaction over undisturbed soil. The surrounding slab features a thickened edge and control joints radiating outward from the column block-out corners at a typical three-inch clearance.
