Two aligned hollow structural section members join end-to-end with an intervening cap plate welded in place. The cap plate measures three-eighths of an inch thick for sections six by six inches or smaller, and one-half of an inch thick for sections seven by seven inches or larger, unless noted otherwise. Fillet welds secure the joint on typical configurations with a clearance gap.
