A hollow structural section beam frames into a hollow structural section column using a slotted HSS beam connection and gusset plate. A three-eighths-inch cap plate sits at the top of the column, welded to the HSS column with a three-sixteenths-inch fillet weld. The gusset plate thickness is specified as twice the thickness of the HSS beam wall thickness, with a one-half-inch minimum. The weld length for the beam connection must be larger than the width of the HSS beam, utilizing one-quarter-inch typical fillet welds. Slots in the HSS beam are limited to a maximum depth of one and one-half inches beyond the gusset and must terminate in a drilled hole.
