Two aligned hollow structural section members join end-to-end with a maximum one-half inch gap at the splice location. Two one-inch thick by one and three-quarter inch wide by one foot six inch long steel plates weld to opposite sides of the members. Each plate connects with quarter-inch fillet welds of specified lengths on each side.
