A seismic expansion joint is detailed across a structural steel framing line featuring a wide-flange beam and joist girder bearing connection. Two three-quarter-inch-diameter A325-N bolts fasten through a three-quarter-inch-thick bearing plate with six-inch-long slotted holes to allow for lateral movement, with the joist girder seat left unwelded to the bearing plate. Web stiffener plates are welded to each side of the beam web, and stiffener plates are provided below the wide-flange beam. A three-quarter-inch by three-quarter-inch bar spans the joint with complete joint penetration welds, maintaining a three-inch minimum clearance.
