A steel beam bears on top of a steel hollow structural section column via a five-eighth-inch bearing plate matching the beam flange width. The column is reinforced with five-sixteenth-inch stiffener plates on each side, aligned with each hollow structural section wall below and welded with one-quarter-inch typical welds. The steel beam web and connection plates are joined using three-sixteenth-inch fillet welds on three sides typically, supplemented by field welds and specific weld symbols as indicated.
