A steel beam connects to the top of a hollow structural section column with a maximum one-half inch gap. A stiffener plate measuring three-eighths of an inch by the hollow structural section width plus one inch is centered and welded to each side of the column using five-sixteenth-inch fillet welds. An internal stiffener plate measuring one-quarter inch by depth over two minimum is welded to each side with quarter-inch fillet welds. Three-quarter-inch-diameter erection bolts secure the connection, with the shear plate extended for intersecting beams to the bottom flange on each side.
