An HSS tube or pipe column splices into a continuous steel beam using cap and base plates. The continuous steel beam runs horizontally with HSS columns aligned above and below, sized per plan. A minimum three-eighths-inch full-height stiffener plate is welded to each side of the beam web using three-sixteenths-inch fillet welds. The cap and base plates match the column width or beam flange width, whichever is greater, with a minimum thickness of one-half-inch matching the beam flange. Four three-quarter-inch-diameter bolts secure the plates, with five-eighths-inch-diameter bolts used when the beam flange is less than four inches wide.
