The steel beam connects to the hollow structural section column web using top and bottom L4x4x3/8 angles matching the column depth, secured with five-sixteenths inch fillet welds. A three-eighths inch plate, sized to the column depth plus one inch, is welded across the web. Additional three-eighths by three-inch plates are provided on each side of the beam with five-sixteenths inch welds. A maximum one-half inch gap is maintained between the beam end and the column face, with one-inch typical clearances. All exposed steel members receive a hot-dip galvanize or zinc paint finish as specified.
