An upper HSS5x0.500 structural steel column connects to a lower reduced-size HSS4x4x3/16 column assembly. The joint is detailed with a 1-inch plate matching the column size above, a 3/8-inch knife plate, and 3/4-inch by 4-inch smooth steel dowels. Fillet welds of 1/4-inch and 5/16-inch sizes secure the plates and hollow structural sections on each side.
