Mill column ends to bear four feet zero inches to top of concrete slab typically unless noted otherwise, with column ends bearing directly against one another. The upper and lower steel columns are joined using a minimum three-quarter-inch splice plate secured with four one-inch diameter high-strength bolts in a snug-tightened connection that need not be slip-critical. Partial-joint-penetration welds are specified at the column flanges based on flange thickness calculations, supplemented by a minimum three-eighths-inch fillet weld evaluated by the contractor for construction needs. A maximum two-and-three-eighths-inch lifting hole is centered in the splice plate between the bolt groups.
