A vertical offset connection between steel beams utilizes a shear plate and flange splice plates. The webs are connected via a shear plate with two 7/8-inch diameter erection bolts, with three bolts required for W18 shapes and larger. Top and bottom flanges feature complete joint penetration welds typically, with specific plate thickness sizing rules relative to the beam depth and a depth offset of two-thirds of the beam depth. Splice plates are welded with five-sixteenths inch fillets and one-inch returns where indicated.
