A steel column connects to a concrete foundation through a structural steel base plate secured by four ASTM F1554 Grade 36 anchor rods with heavy hex nuts or rod heads. A minimum one and a half inches of nonshrink grout is placed beneath the plate over the top of the finished floor or footing. Fillet welds attach the column flanges and web to the base plate according to specified sizes. A base plate schedule correlates column sizes like wide flange and hollow structural sections with specific base plate dimensions, thicknesses, and detail references.
