An upper hollow structural section column bears onto a lower hollow structural section column via a three-quarter-inch thick steel splice plate dimensioned to match the outer profile of the column. Three-eighths-inch fillet welds secure the splice plate to both the upper and lower column sections. The splice is positioned four feet zero inches above the finish floor level.
