A hollow structural section column sized per plan is capped with a minimum one-quarter-inch-thick steel cap plate. The typical option uses a three-sixteenth-inch fillet weld all around with a one-half-inch typical clearance on all sides. The alternative option features a cap plate shaped to match the hollow structural section profile joined with a penetration weld.
