Two steel truss chords meet at a center line splice and connect end-to-end with complete joint penetration welds across the top flange, bottom flange, and web. A cover plate with a length of two feet is added to the bottom flange, featuring a grade and width matching the smaller flange truss chord. Complete joint penetration welds secure the cover plate to the bottom flange typically on each side of the splice. A similar condition occurs at both the top and bottom when the centerline chords of the members align.
