Two hollow structural sections are joined end-to-end using a welded cap plate and a bolted connection across intermediate plates. A one-inch thick cap plate is welded to the hollow structural section using a partial-joint-penetration weld typically on one side with a five-sixteenth-inch fillet size. A one-half-inch thick plate connects the members with a vertical line of five seven-eighth-inch diameter galvanized A325 bolts spaced at equal intervals. Additional one-quarter-inch plates are provided on each side, tied with specified edge distances and bolt spacings.
