A knife plate passes through the center line of a hollow structural section or pipe column, aligned with the girder line as specified on the plan. A fillet weld of size t plus one-sixteenth inch connects the plate to the column on both sides, with plate thickness t determined per schedule A. For round HSS or pipe columns, a typical shear plate connection occurs at an angle per plan where required. Center lines align the column and beam or girder to maintain structural geometry.
