A steel beam connects to a supporting column assembly using a shear plate and a bearing plate. A three-eighths-inch-thick plate is centered on each side of the beam splice, secured with bolts sized per schedule. A three-quarter-inch-thick bearing plate sits beneath the beam, fastened with three-quarter-inch-diameter machine bolts to the steel column below. A three-eighths-inch-thick stiffener plate is welded inside the column with one-quarter-inch fillet welds. Five-sixteenth-inch typical field welds are applied to three sides as required.
