A structural column splice for a special seismic-force-resisting system column provides the flange transition from the upper column to the lower column at the splice level. A minimum taper ratio of 1 vertical to 2.5 horizontal is specified for the flange width transition of the lower column. The upper special frame steel column flange connects directly to the wider lower special frame steel column flange along the horizontal splice level.
