A horizontal construction joint in a concrete wall connects a first concrete pour to a subsequent second pour. The joint interface is roughened to a one-quarter-inch minimum amplitude for shear transfer, and a continuous edge notch is formed along the exposed face. Form ties are located up to three inches maximum below the joint, with a half-inch setback from the exposed face. A continuous two-by-four is placed at the joint line to form the notch and is removed before placing the second pour. Form ties are tightened after removing the wood member and prior to casting the second pour, while continuous reinforcing steel extends through the joint.
