An eighteen-gauge steel track is specified for openings up to eleven feet six inches wide, while a sixteen-gauge minimum steel track is required for openings up to twelve feet six inches wide. The track connects to steel studs sized per plan or framing elevation. Screws secure the track flanges to the vertical framing members.
