A steel column connects to a steel base plate anchored to a concrete pier and footing. The base plate rests on a one and one-half inch layer of non-shrink grout atop the concrete pier. A concrete blockout surrounds the column base within the surrounding eight-inch concrete slab on grade. Vertical pier reinforcing dowels extend down and hook into the concrete footing. A five-sixteenths inch fillet weld secures the column to the base plate.
