A reinforcing bar is welded perpendicular to a structural steel member using low hydrogen electrodes with complete penetration, requiring deformations to be ground off the reinforcing bar to provide flat contact. Number 8 bars and larger shall be butt welded, and no welding is permitted within one inch of the beginning of the bar bend. Fillet and groove welds are detailed with specific root openings and dimensions based on bar diameter D, including one-sixteenth inch minimum clearances and weld proportions of D over three.
