Diagonal W21 steel brace members connect to a heavy steel column via a large gusset plate designated as plate 1-3/4 inches thick with a yield strength of 50 ksi. Two rows of fourteen 1-1/8-inch diameter A490 bolts fasten each brace flange to the gusset plate. The connection maintains a typical 1-inch clearance between the converging brace ends. Additional vertical rows of bolts secure the gusset plate directly to the supporting column flange.
